Mighty Field of Vision is a nonprofit dedicated to the musicians of the Shoals.
Mighty Field of Vision promotes music made by Shoals-area artists, helps preserve and amplify the region's musical heritage, and works to draw in music tourism that supports local culture and the broader Shoals economy.
We connect artists with real revenue opportunities. The Shoals sound is a living tradition, and the musicians carrying it forward deserve a real shot at building a sustainable life doing what they love. Our goal is simple: keep that sound thriving for the next generation.
John D. Wyker III founded Mighty Field of Vision in 1984 to give musicians a place to find encouragement, community, and real support, both financial and otherwise. He built it around artists who tend to get overlooked: independent musicians without label backing, and people going through hard times who needed more than just a shot at exposure.
The organization was formally chartered in 2005 and quickly built a following through its website and internet radio station, broadcasting independent music from the Shoals and beyond to listeners worldwide, 24 hours a day. It came together just as the internet was starting to open up new ways for independent artists to find an audience, and MFOV was part of that early wave, one of the first platforms built entirely around music outside the mainstream.
MFOV relaunched in 2026 with a new board of directors carrying that work forward. It's a mix of people: some who knew Johnny personally and were around in the organization's early years, younger musicians who grew up in the Shoals and came up in that same tradition, and a few transplants who chose to put down roots here and bring a fresh perspective on what makes this place special. That blend of memory, roots, and outside eyes is what shapes how MFOV does its work today.
